Our Director
OWEN PALMQUIST
Based in Chapel Hill, NC, Owen is a veteran documentary filmmaker whose 23-year career has taken him around the world. He has directed, produced and written for virtually every major broadcaster including National Geographic, ABC, Hulu, Smithsonian, History, PBS, as well as world-class institutions like Duke University.
His first love is the research and production of complex scientific and historical documentaries for programs like the PBS science series NOVA and History’s Greatest Mysteries. However, from an early point in his career he was noted for his in-depth and personable interview style - a skill which he continues to put to good use at Legacy Film Group.
He has filmed on every continent (except Antarctica), managed multi-million dollar budgets, and personally created or overseen more than 50 films that have been watched by more than 70 million viewers across nearly 20 countries worldwide.
His full IMDB credits can be found here.
The size of each film will vary based on client needs.
For small and medium-sized projects, Owen will handle most or all aspects of the creative process from production through edit. However, for those projects which require a larger toolset, Legacy Film Group has a deep roster of award-winning talent on which to draw. Examples of freelancers available to add to your project include:
Our Freelancers
Genealogy and FAMILY RESEARCH
For clients who want to dig deeper into their family tree or are looking for that last missing piece of the story, Legacy Film Group contracts with professionals registered through the APG (Association of Professional Genealogists).
We are also happy to work with your own records or a genealogist of your choosing.
Hair and MAKEUP
It surprises many clients to learn that documentary crews typically don’t include a hair and makeup tech (less than 2% of crews I’ve led over the course of my career).
However, at Legacy Film Group our primary goal is for you to feel comfortable on camera. For that reason, we have a roster of local hair and makeup professionals who work in the film industry who are ready to join your production. Alternatively, you are welcome to bring your own stylist.
Historical Photo and ARCHIVAL RESEARCH
Most clients have a treasure trove of family photos and home videos but few people have footage of the historical events surrounding those moments.
Fortunately, we at Legacy Film Group have long experience in tracking down historical footage or simply images of “the way thing used to be.” That said, sometimes we may need something obscure. When that need arises, we contract with the same archival experts we rely on for our History and Smithsonian films.
Graphics and MAPS
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then sometimes a good graphic is worth a million.
It’s not often, but when we need a custom map, an overlay of a historical photo on a modern place, or a 3D reconstruction of a ship or house that no longer exists, then we contract with the same graphics companies that we rely on for our television productions.
Additional Production CREW
Depending on the scope of your project, we may hire an additional DoP (Director of Photography), Audio Operator, Editor, or other positions.
Legacy Film Group has existing relationships with vetted and approved local crew here in North Carolina as well as Emmy award-winning crew we can hire for those Tier II or Tier III projects (please see price list here). The industry’s most talented people are just a phone call away.
